Background
I started working as an editor at my first newspaper job in 1988. A month or so later I also started working as a reporter. A few years after that the newspaper I worked for launched a branch newspaper in a suburb, and I was promoted to the Editor of that newspaper, in addition to continuing my work as a reporter.
My first medical editing work was in South Korea for a brilliant young medical resident doing research on micro-scaffolding combined with novel pharmaceutical treatments to accelerate bone regrowth. Most recently I noticed he's been doing hip replacements. I also helped other medical students in South Korea prepare for the American MCAT exam. Fortunately during my university years I took two years of Anatomy and Physiology, four semesters of chemistry, histology, neurophysiology, several classes in advanced research methods, and other pre-med classes. My specialty was neurophysiology and I did three years of research in neurophysiology at the university, after getting my Bachelor's Degree before four years of Graduate School. I also spent a couple of years learning and doing research with electron microscopes (TEM and SEM), and even joined the Midwestern Society of Electron Microscopists. So, I am well familiar with medical terminology and procedures at least on the research side.
When I lived in China (2009-2021) I mostly edited research studies relating to petroleum engineering. This is something I know at least a little about as 30 years ago I was the project leader on a large research project for a German corporation on the downstream oil industry in ASEAN, including South Korea and Taiwan.
I've also edited books on poetry, all kinds of business documents including company prospectus, proposals for joint ventures, acquisitions and mergers, correspondence, presentations and marketing. Only one of the below edit jobs involved advanced physics, and a couple related to bio-mechanical engineering. Fortunately I also took three semesters of statistics at the university, as most of the research I edit use advanced statistics to analyze the data. Knowledge of statistics is essential for a science editor, in my opinion.
